What I'm reading these days

Your friendly neighborhood Sherrie has a cookbook problem. I know it and own it.  I read them like novels and can tear through one in a couple of days.  I also have a money problem, so I pick most of my books up from the library, Mr. K's (used and new, but always cheap), and free Kindle books (for reading on my Kindle app).  I've wanted to hold books more than reading text on a screen lately, so I've hit the library practically every week. Here's a sample of what I've gone through in August alone.

I first heard of Angelica Home Kitchen thanks to an early 90's copy of Vegetarian Times.  Back then I was playing with the idea of he veggie life and loved the idea of a all veg restaurant. Good book, great recipes.

This one needs no intro.  I checked it out for more ideas on healthy whole food vegan goodness.  I like it, but don't think I need to add this one to the permanent collection.

Between the abundance of rain, a bad spine summer, and crazy schedules,  our garden is a sad, bare wasteland.  Except for mint and huge tomato plants which may or may not bear fruit.  Microgreens, baby vegetables, and sprouts, oh my!

And, you know, I cannot leave anything these two touch unread.  And hubby is a pie addict.  Vegan versions of his beloved blueberry, pecan, and key lime pies will be mastered! At some point.

No pictured are Crazy Sexy Kitchen and Crazy Sexy Diet.   I have the Kindle versions, but can't spend all my time looking a a screen.

So, what are you reading?

My stalker

I cannot leave the room without this guy following.  If I close a door, he waits patiently for me to open it.  He literally lean against me when I lose my balance and keeps me upright on wonky days.  On painful days (like the past few days), he snuggles when I need it and just watches to make sure I'm ok.

Or maybe I'm giving him too much credit.  He's a goofy ball of love. Good boy, Victor.

Thoughts on Father's Day 2013

Let me start by saying that I am exhausted, in a lot of pain, and wide awake. This one may ramble a bit. Short and rambly – my new style? Nah. Maybe. We'll see.

Sometimes I really miss my dad. Father's Day is almost here and it's one of those times. My brother is celebrating his second and hubby is celebrating his 15th (technically 14th, but R was born two weeks later. I count it). My brother, husband, and kids didn't get to meet dad, so it's weird in a way to have them celebrate him.

He'd be beaming at the mention of his grandkids. I know this because he beamed with us. When we didn't work his last nerve that is. There are many pictures of all all smiling together. Real smiles, not the family portrait smiles. And baby bro looks so much like him that it blows me away.

I envy those who still have their dads. By 'have' I mean have a good relationship with him as adults. Believe me, I know you can have someone in your life but no really have them. But that's a whole other series of posts.

Miss you, dad. I'd like to think that on some level you know how I'm doing. I think about what it would be like if you were sill here. You would like hubby. And the kids. You'd like our house. You'd be blown away by baby bro – his brilliance, sense of humor, and the resemblance. And you'd be totally wrapped around baby girl's finger. She is something else.

Happy Father's Day, Dad, Hubby, and Baby Bro. You all rock.

So, who has the Sherrie Voodoo Doll?

Whatever I did to offended or upset you, I'm sorry.

The funky, instant rash on my hand was genius.  And your timing?  Flawless.  Not only did you make it happen and fade before my doc's appointment, you brought it back a day and a half later.  Nice.

This ick kicking my butt?  Great move.  I feel like crud and cannot think clearly.  And having the fever kick in today?  Well done.

Now please, I beg you, please cut it out.

I'll be going back to bed now.

Semi-Wordless Wednesday: Ouch

See this?  This not what a healthy cervical spine should look like.  Now I know another reason for the headaches.  Boo.

And it's a neat picture.

October went fairly well.

Even though it's the month of Halloween (meaning candy & other tempting goodies), I think I came out of October pretty well.

Straight up, with almond or soymilk, with fruit or
almond butter - this stuff is yummy!

  • I ate clean 80% of the time - which was the plan.
  • I pushed play at least four days a week - also part of the plan.
  • I cooked more than I ate out.  But still ate out more than intended.
  • Chocolate Vegan Shakeology daily.  Oh my word is that stuff good!
  • Less pain all month.  Yay!
Well, less pain until around midday November 1.  A migraine came on, as expected, but this one is a doozy. I cheated a little, so I'm paying for it in a big way.  I know I should not eat any gluten, but I got lazy/experimental and thought a little wouldn't hurt.  Meh.  It hurt.  It's still hurting right now.

And on that note, I need to bring this to a close.  Time for another dose of meds and quiet time.  Peace!

Fluctuating weight, freaky nightmares, pain, & cookbooks

Interesting title, eh? Well, I awakened in a panic, panting, and thrilled to realize it was just a dream.  I won't bore you with details, but I had a crazy, super-powered vertical leap and had to save the family from zombie robots. Now to better topics.

I lost another pound this week, and it seems my rate of loss has slowed.  I have an idea on one of the reasons; stress.  Stress occasionally makes me eat mindlessly, but this time it hasn't.  It made me reach for comfort food in general.  Hey, I see not overindulging as a huge plus.  I know why I reached for those foods, I just need to make sure that they are the healthier versions of my favorite go-to dishes. Between playing with recipes online (thanks Happy Herbivore and Tess Challis), I have been tweaking goodies from cookbooks past and present.

Oh, the cookbooks!  I made a trip to the main Charleston County library and went a little crazy in the cooking session. I checked out some oldies but goodies.  Linda Mccartney's Home Cooking,The Real Food Daily Cookbook: Really Fresh, Really Good, Really Vegetarian, and two from Dr. Neal Barnard, Foods That Fight Pain: Revolutionary New Strategies for Maximum Pain Relief and Turn Off the Fat Genes: The Revolutionary Guide to Losing Weight.  I'd originally stopped by for Eat For Health: Lose Weight, Keep It Off, Look Younger, Live Longer (2 book set), but it was already checked out. I should have requested it.  Anyway, I've already blown through Linda's and have to pick up a few more ingredients for Real Food Daily before I can go nuts there.

Oh, if you want to check out recipes before I post here, check out my Examiner column or Facebook Examiner page.  I have quite a few articles, recipes, and photos to post there.

The reason I'm working through Banard's books?  The insane amount of pain I have to work through a couple times a month.  If I can successfully manage the pain without the drugs that make me loopy, I can eventually heal.  Hopefully naturally.  Right now the pain has spread to my neck, and that terrifies me.  When I don't hurt, I want to cook, move, and do all the things I need to do in order to improve my health.  But when I'm in the middle of a major flare up, just leave me in the dark corner, please.

Wow, I just realized that it's 1 am.  This Wahm is sleepy once more, so I think I'm going to call it a night.  Nite, all.

Thank you fallen soldiers and their families for your sacrifice.  I don;t think my appreciation for you all is deep enough at times, but it is deep.

I maintained this week

While a loss would have been nice, I'm happy.  I usually have a monthly hormonal gain, but not this month!  Sweet!

Speaking of sweet, I haven't been craving them. I know, I must not be feeling well, lol, and I'm not.  Allergies are working my last nerve and doing a number on my taste buds.  But I'll survive because I have to.

This one is short and sweet, folks.  I have quite a bit of work to do - articles to write, a book to review, and housework to top it off.  A WAHM's work is never done!

Peace!

I've been quiet, but busy

We're house hunting. Well, we've put in a bid that was accepted and are now in the appraisal and inspections stage. Everything else is in line, so much so that we could close within 2 weeks of the appraisal. It's terrifying and incredibly exciting at the same time. I'll give a heads up if I have to disappear for a day or two to move.

On the food front, I'm doing better. I'm getting 6-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day and 100 oz. or more of water daily. I've also gotten a new pedometer and have been walking myself stupid. We even made a family day an active one - we took a tour of Ft. Sumter and walked on the beach afterward. Saturday I helped my brother and sister in law with their yard sale and got in some heavy lifting. I also got a reminder to get enough water on a hot day. I felt quite ill by the time the sale ended and it took many ounces of water, a cool shower, and a night's sleep to feel better.

It' s almost July, so I'll have new stats to share on the first. So far it looks like June was a good month for me. But July will be even better!

BTW, June 30 is Please Take My Children to Work Day, a plea for a day off for SAHMs. It's a great idea, and MommaSaid.net is the brainchild. So, give a SAHM, WAHM, SAHD, or WAHD the day off. A few hours off would be nice, too. It would be appreciated!
